The Stan Smith was first launched in 1965 and originally named the adidas Robert Haillet after the French player; it carries three rows of perforations on both sides of the leather upper rather than traditional adidas stripes; in 1967 green foam padding was added at the back of the shoe for achilles tendon protection; Stan Smith signed in 1973 and from 1973 to 1978 the tongue carried his portrait with the word Haillet above it; by 1978 Haillet was removed and the shoe was officially renamed
