The Superstar was introduced in 1969 as a low-top version of the Pro Model basketball shoe; it is nicknamed the shell toe for its rubber shell toe cap; the rubber toe protection and non-marking sole drew NCAA and NBA players, notably Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and George Gervin; by 1973 it was reportedly worn by more than 75% of all NBA players; Run-DMC released a tribute song in 1986 and the advertising deal that followed was the first endorsement deal between hip hop artists and a major corporation; in 2015 adidas sold over 15 million pairs, its top selling shoe of that year
