Before 1982 women's athletic shoes were mostly men's shoes made smaller. Reebok drew the Freestyle from scratch for aerobics, and within 2 years it was more than half the business.

Reebok debuted the Freestyle aerobics shoe in 1982, the first athletic shoe designed for women, and by 1984 it accounted for more than half of Reebok's sales. Reebok was established in Bolton, Lancashire, in 1958
